A Muslim cemetery in the western Copenhagen suburb of Brøndby was vandalized late on Friday, Copenhagen Vestegn Police confirmed to the media on Saturday.
According to police spokesman Kim Madsen, some 50 graves were vandalized and numerous tombstones were destroyed and strewn over the burial grounds.
“We don’t consider this to be something aimed at the Muslim community, there isn’t anything to indicate that. It looks like a prank in which someone went out there and just knocked them down,” Kim Madsen told Ekstra Bladet.
Copenhagen Vestegn Police said they were looking for witnesses that could give them more information, but some politicians questioned the police reaction.
“A Muslim cemetery is vandalized but police don’t see it as politically motivated? Why?” Socialist People’s Party MP Ozlem Cekic wrote on Twitter.
